What We Are Not
The Guild asks a lot of men. Language like ours is now used by people with very different aims, so here is plainly what we are not.
Men face real difficulties, and we don't pretend otherwise. But we don't believe men have been wronged into their problems, and we won't teach anyone to blame women, institutions or society for the work that is his to do. Men are unfinished - not broken, and not victims.
We don't treat women as opponents, prizes, or the measure of a man's success. A man's character shows most clearly in how he treats the people closest to him. We expect the men of The Guild to become better partners, fathers, sons, colleagues and neighbours because of their time with us.
We don't measure men by money, dominance, looks or conquest. We measure them by what they carry for others: their reliability, their competence, their word, and their contribution to the people and places around them.
No one here has all the answers - including the man who founded it. The Guild is a community of practice: men learning from one another, holding one another to account, and building something that doesn't depend on any single personality.
Our work is developmental, not clinical. We don't diagnose or treat mental ill-health. We take it seriously, and when a man needs professional help, we'll encourage him to get it and help him find it.
We don't promise transformed lives, fortunes or overnight change. We don't pay members to recruit others. We're open about what The Guild costs, and why, from the first conversation.
We ask for discipline because it makes a man useful to others, not because weakness deserves scorn. Standards without care are cruelty. Care without standards is indulgence. We hold to both.
The Guild is a place for men to face the truth about their lives, to build direction, discipline, character and competence, and to take on more responsibility, not less. We do this in the company of other men committed to the same work, so that together we contribute more to our families and communities than we take from them.
